So true…

Uwe Boll & why I feel so dirty
August 25th, 2008
I’ve often disliked Uwe Boll’s “movies”, if you can call them that, however like a moth drawn to the flame I keep finding myself watching them just to see if the next one is any good. Most of the time I find myself being disappointed…
… last night I was not. I feel so dirty.
Uwe Boll is a director that directs movies that primarily translates video games into cinema and most of the time his movies are made at a “loss”. However, due to tax writeoffs in German tax law, he and his investors make reasonable profit. So due to the tax law, these movies have been pumped out quite heavily and have resulted in many cryouts in the online geek community, including this petition.
I must admit I also originally signed the above petition.
However, like a moth drawn to flame again I took the chance. I took a couple hours off from coding last night and watched Postal for the first time and it was so bad that it was actually good. Unlike Boll’s normal attempt at cinema where he tries to make a film that is decent but fails horribly, he instead he creates something that was meant to be in such bad taste that it was funny.
I’m not sure what was my favourite part, Bush & Bin Laden skipping in a field of flowers while nukes were raining down, Vern Troyer being kidnapped by a religious nut trying to bring about an apocalypse, only to be raped layer by 1000 monkeys or Uwe Boll making an appearance in his own movie poking fun at himself, only to be later shot in the testicles.
That last bit in particular made me laugh out loud.
If Boll can continue to make movies that are this enjoyable perhaps I may have misunderstood him.
Keep up the bad work Uwe!
Setting up new dedicated server
August 23rd, 2008
One of the wiki’s I’ve had for awhile has started experiencing a massive spike in traffic - I was expecting it to happen around this time but not quite the traffic its starting to see (it went up 10x in the last week)
I’m currently putting together a dv server thats hosted at mediatemple so that it can handle the traffic, and learning about memcached in the process (I’ve never used it before).
I’m hoping to see some of the performance boosts that others have reported after configuring mediawiki to utilise memcachd, as I can forsee it requiring it in the future if this growth keeps up.
new application in the works
August 22nd, 2008
Quick post because I promised myself I’d try and update this a little more often.
Time currently is 4:48am and I’ve been working on this code all night, I should probably head to bed as it seems I’m spinning my wheels finally after a good solid couple of hours.
I’ll probably wake up tomorrow and realise this post needs to be edited to make it coherent.
Y-Combinator
August 19th, 2008
Eric and I put in our application for Y-Combinator’s winter 09 round of funding for an idea we came up with.
I was a little nervous before and just after we submitted it, but I truly believe we have one great and one good idea so we’ll just have to see how things pan out with them.
Worst case scenario though, is that we’ll end up having to launch it here at home, but Perth isn’t the best place on the planet to launch a web startup I wouldn’t have thought.
